چکیده
The nucleus of comet 19P/Borrelly was detected using the Planetary Camera (WFPC2) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). During the time of our observations, the comet was 0.62 AU from the Earth, 1.40 AU from the Sun, and had a solar phase angle of 38◦. The high spatial resolution of the HST images allowed us to discriminate clearly between the signal from the nucleus and that from the coma. The lightcurve of the nucleus indicates that it is a highly elongated body rotating with a synodic period of 25.0±0.5 hr. Assuming that the nucleus has a geometric albedo of 4% and is a prolate spheroid with a rotational axis pointing in the direction determined by Sekanina (1979), we derive that its semi-axes are 4.4±0.3 km and 1.8±0.15 km. The corresponding fractional active area of ∼8 % suggests a moderately active comet. The highly anisotropic coma is dominated by a strong sunward fan, and the dust production rate exhibited signs of temporal variability throughout our observations.

Formation of jets in Comet 19P/Borrelly by subsurface geysers
Observations of the inner coma of Comet 19P/Borrelly with the camera on the Deep Space 1 spacecraft revealed several highly collimated dust jets emanating from the nucleus. The observed jets can be produced by acceleration of evolved gas from a subsurface cavity through a narrow orifice to the surface. As long as the cavity is larger than the orifice, the pressure in the cavity will be greater ...
متن کاملSpin Axis Direction of Comet 19P/Borrelly Based on Observations from 2000 and 2001
We calculate the direction of the rotational angular momentum vector, M, of comet 19P/Borrelly based on rotational lightcurve data from 2000, groundbased imaging of the coma during the Deep Space 1 encounter, and the basic near-nucleus coma morphology as revealed by the Deep Space 1 spacecraft. For the most likely direction, we derive a family of solutions (with center at RA=221◦, Dec=−7◦) if t...
متن کاملTelescope observations of the nucleus and inner coma of comet 67 P / Churyumov - Gerasimenko ,
Context. Following the postponement of the launch of the Rosetta spacecraft scheduled in January 2003, comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko emerged as the most suitable new target. However a critical issue was the size, that is, the mass of its nucleus, as the surface module Philae was designed to land on a nucleus with a radius no larger than approximately 1.5 km. Aims. It was therefore crucial to t...
متن کاملA McDonald Observatory Study of Comet 19P/Borrelly: Placing the DeepSpace 1 Observations into a Broader Context
We present imaging and spectroscopic data on comet 19P/Borrelly that were obtained around the time of the Deep Space 1 encounter and in subsequent months. In the four months after perihelion, the comet showed a strong primary (sunward) jet that is aligned with the nucleus’ spin axis. A weaker secondary jet on the opposite hemisphere appeared to became active around the end of 2001, when the pri...
متن کاملAre there a“Hale” and a“Bopp” in comet Hale-Bopp?
Comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp was observed with the adaptive optics system adonis on the ESO 3.6 m telescope at La Silla, Chile, through the broadband J, H, K, SK (Short K) filters on 6 November 1997 and 15 January 1998. After processing of the images using different restoration techniques, the maximum brightness in the coma appeared as a double peak. The separation between the two components was 0...
